FOUR MORE YEARS?

The old adage is that in a democracy a people get the government they deserve. Hopefully this wont be true this time around with Obama's election since its clear that a lot of well meaning and sincere people, many in need, and fearful of a possible depression voted those fears and understandably so. It was as complete a repudiation of the Republican Party, their policies and conservatism as you could get and after the worst administration in history and watching the Republicans run the country into the ground with Bush presiding over and in many ways causing four catastrophic events, Obama became the beneficiary of a country fed up with the Republicans. But will people get what they think they voted for or more of the same?

It was a year when the conventional wisdom said the Democrats could run Mickey Mouse and win but Obama's candidacy made the choices a lot harder for people who weren't voting their fears though its hard to blame working people in Michigan and Ohio for doing just that.

Many, understandably, voted to punish the Republicans and no one can say they didn't deserve it. The bad news is that the government is now in the hands of Pelosi, Reid and Obama by default, three people who have already proved they wont have a clue as to what to do with it. On the other hand no one expects them to be worse than the Republicans. Or will they?

When George Bush became President in 2000 many of us couldn't believe there were people so stupid as to actually vote for someone so obviously over his head and unqualified to be President. It wasn't enough to say the Supreme Court gave Bush the Presidency. It really shouldn't have been close and we said it was hard to believe people could be that stupid to elect someone so clearly unqualified.

After fulfilling our expectations and having 4 years of the most inept incompetent Presidency in history it seemed almost impossible to think people would be stupid enough to re-elect him. But people were and they did. And what followed was another four disastrous years.

Now its the Democrats turn as someone as unqualified, unprepared and inadequate as Bush has been elected but for completely different reasons because Obama has problems to deal with that Bush never had. Bush caused most of the problems, but that aside, they are still there and need solving and based on his track record Obama is not going to solve them.

Unfortunately, add to his lack of qualification that Obama is more dishonest, underhanded, and untrustworthy than any candidate in 40 years and while the repudiation of the Republicans for the last 8 years is well deserved, another four years of ineptitude is not deserved but that is entirely what people who voted for better is likely to get.

For those hoping Obama is actually going to do something to solve the problems facing the country, there is the likelihood that, like Bush he will make them worse. And the reason for that likelihood is that Obama has never done anything or accomplished anything or solved any problems in the past nor has he shown the slightest inclination to wanting to do so which is why he voted "present" over a hundred times in the Illinois state legislature and had a record of doing nothing in the US Senate. So why should anything be different now?

If Obama follows his pattern it will be to do nothing which is the safe thing to do. After all if you do nothing then you cant get blamed for much. Obama promised to start bringing the troops home from Iraq within 60 days after taking office. I'll give odds that never happens. Obama didn't spend 6 years in the Illinois state senate doing absolutely nothing because he is a dynamic problem solver. What he is and what he has made himself into is a symbol. Nothing more.

So will Obama turn the current economic crisis into a depression? Hard to say. Maybe. Will he make it better? Very doubtful. Like George W. Bush, he has never once ever shown he has the skill or the knowledge the intuition or problem solving skills or the conceptual ability to grasp a problem and solve it. What's even worse he's never even shown he has the desire to even try.

For many, his lack of problem solving won't matter. Like Reagan in the 80's he has been a symbol for people who need symbols instead of anything real. Or are superficial enough to believe that symbols will solve their problems. The primary symbol of course is that he is black but that is not why most people voted for him. They voted as much against the Republicans and holding them accountable for the last 8 years as anything else. And working people voted for him because they are concerned about losing their jobs and their homes and the economy is the number one issue in the country.

The media of course is going to milk the race thing for all its worth. That's who and what they are. They can always be depended on to make irrelevant things important and reduce important things to irrelevance especially if they think it will make buck. I'm sure if he could, Wolf Blitzer would start doing the news in blackface.

But it's not going to be any consolation after 8 years of Republican ineptitude and incompetence that if we have more of the same the face on the incompetence will be black instead of white. If things get worse, the fact that it will have a black face will mean nothing to the workers in Ohio or Michigan who lose their jobs.

Obama promised change because he knew how to press the buttons of people who wanted just that and made himself a symbol for people who wanted a symbol. But Obama has lied, reneged and broken every promise he ever made. That is indisputable. His path to success has been to do nothing or as little as possible and his goals have always been simply to get elected to the next office. But he has inherited a set of problems that need action. His history is that he will do little or nothing about them. That is what he has been in the past and taking action is just not who he is because its not who he's ever been.

Will the next four years simply be like the last four only with a Democratic Party label? Its not going to take long to find out. We'll know as soon as the first promise is broken and that might be with regards to Iraq. It also might be with the economy if things gets worse

Its been a tough year for choices. The Republicans deserved to be punished for their gross negligence and incompetence of the last 8 years. On the other side the Democratic congress hasn't exactly covered itself in glory and the Democratic candidate for President has shown the character of a shady used car salesman and zero problem solving or legislative skills. Yes he is black but I don't think the amount of melanin in his skin, the chemical that makes a black person dark and kept their ancestors from getting skin cancer from the sun's ultra violet rays, is going to help him much if the economy gets worse.

The country is just about finished with 8 years of an unqualified President. Its not going to take long to find out if there is going to be four more years of the same. A lot of people think there will be. Obama's speeches and ability to manipulate the easily manipulated won't help him now.

As Obama joked to a reporter a few years ago at one of his book signings, "Maybe it's time for me to actually go do something". He never did. And it could be because he doesnt know how. Let's hope for the sake of the people who voted for him that the real change is that he is the one who changes. If he doesn't, it could be a long four years for the people who expected more.

  1. Marc, thank you for this post. I saw only part of Obama's speech last night. He seemed very somber and distant, and again, he failed to reach me.

This morning I heard them talking on Morning Joe that one of the papers in NY who has deified Obama admitted it and said that they had to turn him into a saint and demonize others so Obama could win this. But now the reality is he is not a saint and they worry that the fall from sainthood to reality is going to hit hard. People will be disappointed in him.

Also, Obama himself told John McCain when he called "John, I need you, you know what you are doing, you've been around a long time". Yes, Obama, you do need McCain, and Hillary and those people who actually have a clue to what they are doing. Hillary would know what to do right now. Obama is so used to copying others and taking credit, he really does not have a clue about how to solve our problems. I heard he also said "Now what do they expect me to do?". Well govern idiot. That's what you were CHOSEN to do. Or is it all about speaking the words HOPE and CHANGE for eternity and never getting anything done?

P.S. He also acknowledged those of us who did not vote for him. I haven't earned your respect yet, but I heard you. Oh really? If you do not acknowledge Hillary Clinton you did not hear us. We shall see Mr. Obama. We shall see.

  2. Hi Tom - I've been reading your blog with appreciation the last month or so. I hope you're right that Obama will do nothing, because that is who he has always been. Obama has never done anything in his life…except give $160 million dollars to radical causes, cheat in politics, accept bribes. And that’s why I fear you're wrong. Obama can’t solve any problem, but he can do a lot of damage to our democracy and free enterprise system.

  3. An excellent article. As always, I look forward to your opinions since they so closely match my own.

With the mainstream press being unreliable, there are few places to go for a different perspective. I hope you continue posting your ideas.

I believe, along with 55 million others, that Obama will unravel in time. There is not enough substance to hold him together. We can only hope that this will be a 1-term presidency.

  4. Marc, I think it's time people took a hard look at your record and ask themselves, "Would you buy a used car from this guy?"

April 21: "The candidate who has claimed to be a uniter, someone who can help people bridge the divisiveness that has existed in the past has proved to be the most divisive figure in the history of Democratic politics."

Fact: Obama received more votes than any candidate in history and won the female vote, Hispanic vote and independent vote. Oh yeah, he also became the first African American elected President. Sounds like a uniter to me.

" David Sirota, live-blogging today at Salon:

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) delivered Democrats’ election-day message this morning on Fox News. Officially speaking for the Obama campaign, McCaskill told Fox that Barack Obama’s first order of business as president is to appease Republicans and start filling his cabinet with them.

I’m not making this up. Here’s the key exchange:

FOX: If [Obama] wins tonight, what do you expect to happen Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from a President-elect Obama?

MCCASKILL: He will surprise America how quickly he will try to reach out to the millions of people who are voting for John McCain today — and the milions of people who have questions about his leadership. He’ll want to reassure them, and he’ll want to find Republicans to work with him in his cabinet.

FOX: You don’t predict it’s going to be “we have a mandate, we’re going to govern from the left”? You think it’s going to be more of a bipartisan let’s sort of heal and bring everybody together?

MCCASKILL: He will pleasantly surprise everyone who votes for John McCain today.

How … predictable. I guess my reaction is why I haven’t been invited to any parties tonight.

    Sirota goes on to say:

I would say I was surprised that McCaskill decided to use her role as Democrats’ election-day spokesperson to insist that a Democratic win will prioritize the very Republican governance that has become so unpopular. But then, I’ve been around this crap for too long to be surprised.

It seems no matter how hated George W. Bush and the Republican Party are in the country at large, no matter how an election may pivot on that hatred, the political Establishment of both parties is ideologically loyal to conservative corporatism. Indeed, that is the power of money — the power of the hostile takeover, if you will. And that means the uprising that this election season has stoked will need to become all the more intense starting tomorrow if we are to make sure a (hopefully) President-elect Obama doesn’t spend the first days after the election constructing another conservative Presidency — only this time, building it with bricks and mortar marked “progressive.”

Yeah, but maybe the brave men and women of Congress will steer him toward progressive causes!

That was sarcasm, in case you couldn’t tell."

  6. Marc, I think it's time people took a hard look at your record and ask themselves, "Would you buy a used car from this guy?"

Obama has been successful raising money for the primary campaign but it will not be enough for a general election...with half the Democratic party essentially boycotting him, he will have an impossible time raising enough money for the general election since he needs the support of the entire Democratic Party and he wont get it.

    Fact: Need I say it?

  7. It's Over?

How about we wait until Obama actually does something worth gloating over before you go so far out into the stratosphere.

    Electioneering is one thing.

It's quite different to actually govern, and Obama has very little experience at that. He's always been looking for his next gig.

Now that he's got this gig, unless he plans to run for G-d, he's going to actually have to do the work this time.

So I think it's probably best to just have a breath, and see how that goes first. Before the gloating.

  8. I am glad the election is finally over. It's been a long 1 1/2 year ordeal, enough to tire me out. Time to move on and I am saying bye bye to news programs on TV. Don't want to ruin my day by seeing what's his face.

August 4: I wrote more than a month ago that when it came to winning Florida, a state the Democrats almost certainly have to win, Fidel Castro had a better chance of winning than Obama and that is still true.

  10. Cullen,

I agree that Obama has many challenges ahead of him. I hope he delivers on the promises he made to the American people and I will certainly hold him responsible if he doesn't.

I will, however, judge his record objectively and not just attack for the sake of attacking. Not everything Obama does is evil and for months Marc has derided and dismissed many of us around here and as kool-aid drinkers and morons. Millions of Americans are genuinely inspired by Obama. We don't deserve to be discounted as morons for that. If Obama fails to deliver you better believe that many of us will rise up in protest, but we will judge on his record, and not just make things up to fit a narrative.

As a fiduciary officer of The Denver Group, Marc should be sued for stealing money from hundreds of donors and wasting it. He ridiculues Obama for his vast spending and tries to hide his own behavior. Not only did he and his partner take nearly 20% of the donations for their own personal use, in the days leading up to the election they then used the rest of the money to purchase commercial time in Michigan and Southern Florida!!!! What kind of sense does this make? McCain abandoned Michigan more than a month ago and you're putting hard earned donations there.

Marc's hypocrisy is sickening and if I'm gloating it's because I'm glad he's finally being exposed as the fraud he's always been.

Uh-huh, just like you all rose up in protest over his broken pledge on FISA, his votes to continue financing the war, and the latest, the use of his words and voice to push the anti-gay-marriage Proposition 8 amendment in California? You know, the one his supporters overwhelmingly voted in favor of? Bill Clinton, btw, came out against it, but not the Messiah; in fact just the opposite is true.

Please, do tell us some more about how you are not just moronic, zombified Kool-Aid-drunken dreamers who fantasize about the nonexistent qualifications of this empty suit because...so far the Magic 8-Ball says "Yes you are!"

  13. Wow! Why the hateful spew? If you support Barry then why are you attacking Marc? What's your point?

All anyone either pro or anti Barry has stated is their truth. A truth that has been informed by many years of policy and political work. People have a right to their opinion and they have a right to voice it if they wish.

You may not appreciate the position Marc took during this election but who in the hell do you think you are for coming to his blog and spewing such ugly, mean spirited and hateful crap?

Is there a blog you own and manage that Marc can go to and post such ugliness? I doubt it b/c people like you lurk in the shadows and don't have the integrity or spine to stand up and voice your thoughts openly.

  14. It's Over-

I , too, will judge, and have judged, objectively. I have come to a deeply different conclusion about Obama than you have, based on the available information and record. And last time I checked, I was still allowed to do that.

    That's why I agree with Marc. ;)

He didn't tie me up in a corner and force me to agree with him.

If you cant afford a calender Im sure there are a few free ones around. April 21st? Were you in a coma the last month? Did you know there was a stock market crash? Obama won by a landslide because people are afraid of losing their jobs and their homes and that we could be headed for a depression none of which had happened as of April 21st. If you think this landslide was the result of people drinking the Kool Aid like you did then you need more than a calender.

I think since your comment is based on something I wrote April 2st wjhich is still entirely true, he is a polarizing force, people should ask "would you buy a used comment from this person"? Try a newer model next time.

If youre so sure youre right, prove what you say and file a complaint with the FEC otherwise shut up. If I dont get a notice from the FEC you can be sure I will let everyone know.

I dare you to file a complaint instead of hiding behind some moronic name and if you do I will know who you are and sue your ass off. And if you dont then you can be sure I will let people know that your not only a fraud but a little coward.

  18. Hi Marc,

Thanks so much for your blog. It was a voice of sanity during these difficult months. Well, the country just had had it with the Repubs, understandably so, and voted for Obama. What can we say. Obama must definitely earn my respect, for he sure doesn't have it now. Perhaps he won't be so bad. Perhaps he will finally apply himself, and fulfill the potential all of his many many fans have talked about. Hopefully he does realize that this is a full time job. And he might have to work weekends.

  20. Marc, thank you again for all your wit and wisdom during the last year- plus. I would have been lost without you and PUMA. In my opinion, Obama won't have to actually think in his new position. Other than Pinnochio, puppets don't really need to, do they? His strings will be manipulated and pulled from multiple puppeteers--the DNC "leaders", lobbyists, and a host of US and foreign characters with the real show about to play out. Just wait'n watch!

  21. Marc, I'm not a "well writer" (Cheers line), and I thank you for stating so clearly my views about Obama. People don't change because they are given a better job. A bad worker will remain a bad worker. Bush responded to 9/11, Katrina and the financial meltdown the same way -- late and with utmost incompetence. Obama will also be faced with one or more crisis and his response will be what he's practiced: whine and blame others for the situation he faces. Americans take their civic duties too lightly and deserve presidents that don't take their job seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks. That pretty much summed up my feelings. (I didn't vote the top of the ticket this year.)

I watched Obama after the speech. Here he had just become POTUS and, yet, he was cool and brusque towards the people on the stage (including, at times, his wife). Distant, disconnected. None of the joy the Clintons or JFK showed when they won.

And the speech to me sounded hollow. Beautifully phrased sentences, delivered well, but with no emotion or energy behind them.

As you pointed out, Obama has never accomplished anything other than the advancement of his own career - and now he's reached the top with a guaranteed lifetime pension & endless high-paid speeches & consultancies to follow.

I am worried because the troika of Obama-Pelosi-Reid is, at best, Republican light.

But, perhaps we should be grateful that he apparently doesn't care enough about anything to take a risk. A man with his ability to bamboozle so many millions would be fearfully dangerous if he actually had an agenda.

  23. Marc,

I apologize if you think the above meant I was literally accusing you of stealing money. I do not think that. Perhaps the whole sentence is not clear enough but it is my opinion that the way you and your partner chose to spend the money, was so wasteful it should be a crime. As we've previously discussed it is your right to pay yourself as a consultant and I do not think you violated any FEC rules. It just seems hypocritical to have done so.

  24. Report finds pay gap for UT women faculty
AUSTIN — Women full professors at the University of Texas at Austin make $9,000 less annually on average than their male colleagues.

That's according to a report prepared by a 22-member UT task force.

The Austin American-Statesman reports UT President William Powers Jr. praised the report for "identifying issues we must address to support the professional growth of our faculty."

Provost Steven Leslie, who established the Gender Equity Task Force, said steps would begin immediately to address the report's recommendations, which include developing a five- to 10-year plan to reduce or eliminate gender inequities in hiring, promotion, salaries and governance.

UT professor of molecular genetics and microbiology, Shelley Payne, says there's a perception among the administrators that women are simply not as good as men.

The report noted shortcomings in everything from promotion opportunities to the overall campus climate for women faculty members.

This turned into a full time job for me and there is nothing hypcritical about being paid for what you do anymore than it was hypocritical for the Fedex driver who delivered our commericals got paid to do that or the TV stations were paid for the time we bought running the commericals.

If you want to talk about waste go look at Obama's FEC reports and see where $300 million went and the millions of dollars PER MONTH Axelrod put in his pocket as campaign manager. As for waste you can start with Obama using more than $3 million in campaign contributions to rent a football stadium for a few hours to give his acceptance speech when the Pepsi Center would have done just fine and then charge people $5 a head to get in. That is hypocrisy.

The money I was paid for my work was far less than any mid-level political consultant made working for any of the candidates. There was no hypocrisy.

  31. As a gay man in Florida. I see what Obama's uniting did to the glbt community. He united all the factions to continue discrimination. Not against African Americans of course. They got their rights years ago anyway. No, he started with The Gospel Tour at the beginning of his campaign parading through the churches of the South with ex-gays and anti-gays talking about Jesus saving them from Homos. Then it was The Faith Tour mid-campaign and of course, his promise to expand Bush's Faith Based Initiative. Not once did he speak out publicly against the discrimination presented on the same ballots as he was on. So much for Uniting with his oft repeated statement "we are all citizens of the United States of America". There is a second class of citizens, only now we can't count on the Democratic Party to stand with us either. It was Obama's 90% African American support that passed those amendments. I will remember that if nothing else from this election.

  34. Thanks for this essay.

I'm of the school that believes at this point, Democrats are co-owners of the country's problems and the "blame Bush" mantra isn't going to carry weight with me. I think that's becoming one more tactic for avoiding actual responsibility in the Obama arsenal. The reaction to Prop 8 was an indication: if the stripping of civil rights for LGBT was objectionable to Obama Inc., the was an opportunity to show strong public leadership on the matter. He and the Dem leadership have chosen not to. This speaks volumes, and certainly speaks to the points you raise.

You got to the heart of the matter: "For many, his lack of problem solving won't matter. Like Reagan in the 80's he has been a symbol for people who need symbols instead of anything real. Or are superficial enough to believe that symbols will solve their problems."

This does remind me of Reagan -- that same belligerent and empty sloganeering. All symbol, no change. It's morning in America. Or mourning in America, when we realize we're out here without jobs or healthcare or a Fourth Estate. On the upside, we'll be thoroughly informed about BO's new dog.

I am one of the donors whose money was entrusted to you and Heidi Li. I am proud of how it was spent.

Me too! Knowing that you and Heidi will CONTINUE to work and fight on our behalf makes me even MORE proud. I donated the max to Senator Clinton, I was very proud of her and her battle for the nomination but now after her over the top and unecessary cheerleading for Obama, not so much. There is an important cause that needs to be championed by a leader or leaders in our political system. Sadly that champion will not be Hillary Clinton. You guys need to carry on!
